TODAY’S GEM
Tuesday, 8 a.m. I’m at my desk.
The sketch I’ve been preparing for two weeks is finally ready.
The light is soft.
My atelier is quiet.
And I’m holding my favorite pencil.
Is today the day I finally beat this art block?
1- I ruined it.
I start drawing.
The lines feel good. My hand remembers.
But then… The voice creeps in.
“This isn’t good enough.”
“They’re not going to like it.”
“You should do better.”
“It’s not perfect.”
Suddenly I’m not drawing anymore.
I’m fixing. Erasing. Redrawing. Erasing again.
And before I even notice, the paper tears.
The portrait is ruined.
2 – Never about skills.
That’s when I realized something:
Art block is rarely about skill.
The drawing started fine.
It’s your mindset that betrays you. The inner dialogue that spirals out of control the moment you care too much. And what’s really hard is that the thoughts dragging you back are often the same ones that blocked you in the first place.
They know exactly where to hit.
So what should I do?
What five years of drawing taught me is that there’s only one way through:
Start again.
Keep moving.
Until momentum takes over.
So I’m going to this drawing. One way or another.
Conclusion
I’ve been thinking a lot about sharing more of this in my upcoming Patreon. Like how I deal with art block, and what I do when I ruin a drawing?
What do you think?
Voilà, that’s all for me.
Bisou,
Léa.
